Anthony Thompson Shumate
My work incorporates a commercial dialect with the intellectualism of contemporary art. By exploiting familiar iconography and applying them to a provocative social language, I am able to make subversive commentary on the modern American social landscape. The mixing of these two forms of communication opens a dialogue between the two visual disciplines and bridges the chasm of misunderstanding, allowing a broader audience to enter the work.
The purpose of my work does not hinge on aesthetics alone, but rather employs it to hook the viewer into participating in the commentary or issue the work is addressing. I do not expect for the entire audience to “understand” the work, but rather participate in its interaction with all aspects of the informed and uninformed – artistically, socially, and intellectually. These layers are the true target of the work.
